These photographs have been taken over the past few years.  They depict scenes from TICCS courses, fieldwork and places that TICCS participants visit while in Tamale and Ghana.

Everyone seems to know when TICCS is having a dance. 16The old lady and the hut. 17The drummers warm up as they prepare to single out course participants to do their own thing. 18Dr. Abdulai’s clinic is supplied with an assortment of drugs and medicaments which this volunteer pharmacist offers to patients free of charge. All drugs are donated to the clinic from hospitals and organizations in Europe and America. 19The dancers do the original, more rigorous, version of the “twist” 20The dancers including men and women line up for the next performance. 21Another Bamaya dancer is singled out for a virtuoso performance. Note the hat festooned with magical amulets and the bands across his chest which protect him against the envy and possible evil intentions of some onlookers. 23The men line up for the dance called “Bamaya” which is said to have been stolen from the bush fairies by a courageous hunter who brought it back and taught it to the people of his village. 24The dancers are in full swing. 25Class 26After visiting the “Slave villages” near Navrongo, the course participants take a refreshing break here at a “spot” in Bolgatanga before hitting the road back to Tamale. 27A wood carver with his wares. Most wood carving today is for the tourist trade. Many artists copy artifacts from African art books. They add on or change designs following the whim of their customers. 28The basic underlying structure of this ocean-going fishing boat is made from a hollowed out log. Courageous fishermen spend weeks at sea and range hundreds of miles along the West African coast in search of fish. 29Calabashes are still highly valued as containers for carrying “women’s things” especially items for sale in the markets. This woman is carrying a load of beans to be sold in the market. 30The heat, the dust and noise make coconut milk an especially refreshing treat while touring through the streets of Accra. 31If you’ve wondered where “the bump” originated, wonder no more. This woman’s dance is very popular among peoples of West Africa. Among the Dagomba it is known as “Tora” while the Anufo call it “Bambutti”. 32In tropical climates it is essentially to bathe often. Ghanaians bathe 2-3 times daily. Here a mother shows us how to bathe a baby with a few cups of water. 33The “White House” at TICCS. Note the upper level of the Jungle Bar above the veranda.
